When Someone Changes the Subject
I was talking about my favorite thing, and they started a new topic.. Read it together, at your pace. Every page is written in your child's voice.
1. Sometimes I am talking about something I love. Then the other person starts talking about something else.
2. My brain might say, "Hey! I was not done!"
3. Changing the subject can mean many things.
Why might someone change the subject? My topic reminded them of their topic. They have something exciting to share too. They were ready for something new. We do not have enough information to know. ๐ก Topic changes have many reasons. We cannot know which without more information. Conversations are like ping-pong โ the topic bounces both ways.
4. I can choose. I can follow their new topic for a while. I can say, "Can I finish my story first?" Both are okay.
5. I can practice a friendly line.
6. Topics come and go, like trains at a station. My favorite topic will come around again.

Sovelo Stories are original social narratives, written for neurodivergent kids and reviewed against strict guardrails: no eye-contact training, no masking, no mind-reading โ and "no" is always a complete answer. Evidence-informed preparation, not a treatment. ยฉ Ezra Brown.
