When Someone Gives a Short Answer

I asked a question, and I only got one or two words back.. Read it together, at your pace. Every page is written in your child's voice.

1. Sometimes I ask a friend a question. They say just one word. "Fine." Or "Yeah." Or "Okay."
2. Short answers can feel confusing. I might wonder if something is wrong.
3. But short answers can mean many things.
Why might someone give a short answer?
  • They are tired or low on energy.
  • They are busy or focused on something.
  • Short answers are just how they talk sometimes.
  • We do not have enough information to know.
๐Ÿ’ก A short answer can have many reasons. We cannot know what someone feels from word-count alone. I can notice more signals, wait, or ask.
4. I can notice other clues too. Are they smiling? Are they busy? Clues work better together than alone.
5. If I want to know more, I can check in gently.
6. Quiet times end. Talky times come back. Friendship holds both.
