The Why Question

Wanting reasons is great thinking โ€” and there are smooth ways and times to ask.. Read it together, at your pace. Every page is written in your child's voice.

1. My brain loves reasons. When someone tells me to do something, a big WHY pops up. Wanting to understand is a strength.
2. But once, when Dad said "shoes on, we're leaving," I asked why five times in a row and we almost missed the bus. My why was honest โ€” the timing was the problem.
3. Here is the unwritten rule, written down: there are two kinds of moments. Regular moments have room for why. Urgent moments need the action first โ€” and the why still exists, just after.
4. My calm why sounds like this: "Can you help me understand why?" It tells people I want to learn, not argue. People answer that version almost every time.
5. The next morning Dad said "shoes on!" I put them on first. In the car I asked, "Can you help me understand why we left so fast?" He said the bus comes at 8:02, and being late means missing it. A real reason! It made tomorrow easier.
6. Sometimes the honest answer is that nobody knows the reason.
I asked why the sky is that exact color tonight. Grandma said, "Hm, I actually don't know." What is true?
  • Some questions don't have a known answer yet โ€” we could look it up together.
  • Grandma is ignoring me.
  • My question was a good one anyway.
๐Ÿ’ก Whys are wonderful. Some get answered now, some after, and some are still waiting for the whole world to figure out.
7. My whys are welcome. Now first when it's urgent, why right after โ€” and my calm why gets real answers.
