Asking a Follow-Up Question
Keeping a conversation going with another question. Read it together, at your pace. Every page is written in your child's voice.
1. After someone answers my question, I can ask another one about their answer. This is called a follow-up.
2. Follow-ups show I was really listening. They say: tell me more!
3. If they said "I went camping," I can ask: "Where did you camp?" or "Did you sleep in a tent?"
4. My friend says they baked cookies this weekend.
5. One or two follow-ups is usually plenty. Then I can share something of mine, or we can just play.
6. The back-and-forth winds down on its own. When it does, the conversation is finished โ and my follow-up made it longer and better.
