When the Topic Changes

The conversation moves to something new. Read it together, at your pace. Every page is written in your child's voice.

1. Conversations move around. We might start with dinosaurs and end up talking about lunch. Topics hop like frogs.
2. When the topic hops, I might feel surprised. I was not done with the old topic!
3. Why do topics change?
Why might the topic hop?
  • The new topic reminded them of something.
  • They said all they had about the old topic.
  • Something nearby caught their attention.
  • We don't know yet — and that's okay.
💡 Topic changes are normal, not rude. Conversations are windy roads, not straight lines.
4. I can hop along with the new topic. Or I can say: "Can we go back to the dinosaur part? I had one more thing."
5. I ask to return to my topic.
6. The conversation flows on until it ends. Topics came and went. I rode the hops like a pro.
