Waiting for My Turn to Talk

Holding my words while someone else talks. Read it together, at your pace. Every page is written in your child's voice.

1. In a conversation, people take turns talking. While one talks, the other holds their words.
2. Sometimes my words feel like popcorn โ€” they want to pop out right away! That popping feeling is normal.
3. I can hold my popcorn words a few ways.

4. A pause is my green light. When the speaker stops and breathes, my turn can begin.
5. Sometimes I wait and wait, and the pause never seems to come.
What could I do?
  • Say "Can I say something?"
  • Wait a little longer.
  • Save my thought for later.
  • I'm not sure โ€” and that's okay.
๐Ÿ’ก There are many good ways to get a turn. Waiting is one; asking is another.
6. When the conversation ends, all the turns are done. I held my words and got my turns. That is a real skill, and mine is growing.
