Riding an Airplane

A plane flies us far away, fast. Read it together, at your pace. Every page is written in your child's voice.

1. Today I am riding an airplane. Airplanes fly people to far places much faster than cars.
2. We walk down a hallway called a jet bridge and step onto the plane. We find our seats by the numbers. I buckle my seatbelt.
The plane is a long tube with rows of seats. The air smells a little different. There is a low humming.

3. Takeoff is the big part. The engines get LOUD and the plane goes very fast. Then the ground drops away below us. My tummy might feel a whoosh.
Loud roaring, shaking, and a pushed-back feeling in my seat. It lasts a few minutes, then gets calmer.

4. Honest part: my ears might feel full or popped. That can feel weird or even ouchy for a moment. Swallowing, yawning, or drinking helps my ears feel better.
5. In the sky, the plane mostly hums along. Sometimes it bumps โ€” that is called turbulence, like a road with potholes in the sky. The seatbelt light comes on, and we stay buckled.
Bumps can shake my drink. The pilots know about bumps. Bumpy air is normal air.

6. I have choices on the plane. I can choose a window or aisle seat when we book. I can choose what to watch, read, or play. I can ask a grown-up what happens next.
7. Landing is loud too. The wheels touch with a bump and a roar, and the plane slows down hard. Then it rolls slowly to the gate. When the seatbelt light turns off, we unbuckle, get our bags, and walk off. The flight is over โ€” we made it!
