At the Airport

The big building where plane trips start. Read it together, at your pace. Every page is written in your child's voice.

1. We are going to the airport. The airport is the big building where people get on and off planes.
2. Airports have an order: check in, security, walk to the gate, wait, then board. Knowing the order helps me know where we are in the trip.
3. At security, our bags ride a belt through a scanner. I walk through a doorway machine. Sometimes shoes and jackets go in bins. A worker might wave a wand near me. The wand does not touch or hurt.
Security is crowded and echoey. Bins slam, machines beep, workers call out directions.

4. Then we walk to our gate. The gate is where we wait for our plane. Screens show the flight numbers and times.
Loudspeakers make announcements. Rolling suitcases rumble by. Big windows show planes outside.

5. I have choices. I can choose a seat by the window to watch planes, or a quieter corner. I can choose a snack for the wait. I can ask, "How long until we board?"
6. Sometimes airports change the plan.
What could happen while we wait?
  • Our plane boards on time and we walk on.
  • The flight is delayed and we wait longer.
  • The gate number changes and we walk to a new gate.
  • We don't know yet โ€” we can watch the screen and ask a worker.
๐Ÿ’ก Airport plans can shift. The screens and workers help us know what is happening.
7. When it is time, a voice calls our group to board. We show our tickets and walk down the jet bridge onto the plane. The airport part is done โ€” now the flying part begins.
