Riding the Bus

A big shared ride that follows a route. Read it together, at your pace. Every page is written in your child's voice.

1. Today we are riding the bus. A bus is a big shared ride. It drives the same path every day, called a route.
2. We wait at the bus stop. When our bus comes, we let people step off first. Then we step on. A grown-up pays or taps a card.
The bus is tall and rumbly. The doors open with a hiss. The step up might be big.

3. We find seats, or we stand and hold a pole if it is full. The bus starts and stops many times. My body might sway. Holding on keeps me steady.
The engine rumbles under the floor. Brakes might squeak. A bell dings when someone wants the next stop.

4. Other riders sit near us. Some talk, some look at phones, some sleep. On a bus, people mostly keep to themselves, and that is normal.
5. I have choices. I can choose a window or aisle seat when there is room. I can ask a grown-up, "How many stops are left?" I can pull the cord or press the button when it is our turn โ€” I can ask to do it.
6. When our stop is next, we ring the bell. The bus pulls over. We hold the rail, step down, and we are there. The bus ride is over, and the bus rolls on without us.
