Riding an Elevator

A little room that lifts us between floors. Read it together, at your pace. Every page is written in your child's voice.

1. Today I will ride an elevator. An elevator is a little room that moves up and down inside a building.
2. We press the button on the wall and wait. When the elevator comes, it dings and the doors slide open. We let people out first, then step in.
3. Inside, we press the number of our floor. The doors close by themselves. Then the elevator moves.
The doors make a soft rumble. When it moves, my tummy might feel a tiny drop or lift. The ride hums.

4. Sometimes other people ride with us. Elevators are small, so people stand close and mostly stay quiet. Facing the doors is what most riders do.
5. I have choices. I can ask to press the button โ€” pressing buttons is a fun job. I can stand by the wall or by my grown-up. If the elevator feels like too much, I can ask to take the stairs instead.
6. The elevator dings at our floor and the doors slide open. We step out, and the ride is over. It usually takes less than a minute, door to door.
