The Grocery Store

We shop for the food our family needs. Read it together, at your pace. Every page is written in your child's voice.

1. We are going to the grocery store. The grocery store is where we buy food for our home.
2. We get a cart and walk up and down the aisles. A grown-up has a list. The list tells us what to find.
The store is bright with humming lights. Freezer aisles feel cold. Carts rattle and beep sounds come from the front.

3. I have jobs I can choose. I can be the list checker. I can put the apples in a bag. I can pick which cereal we get, if it is a choosing day.
4. Sometimes I want a treat that is not on the list. I can ask. The answer might be yes, and it might be no. No is not mean โ€” it just means not today.
5. At the end we go to the checkout. Beep, beep โ€” each food gets scanned. We put the food in bags, and a grown-up pays.
The checkout has beeping, bag rustling, and sometimes a line. It is the loudest part for many kids.

6. Sometimes the store is different than we planned.
What could happen at the store?
  • We find everything and check out fast.
  • The store is out of something on our list.
  • The line is long and we wait.
  • We don't know yet โ€” stores are a little different every day.
๐Ÿ’ก Shopping trips have surprises sometimes. Backup plans keep surprises small.
7. We carry the bags to the car or the bus. When we get home, we put the food away. Then the grocery trip is all done.
