Staying at a Hotel

A borrowed room to sleep in on a trip. Read it together, at your pace. Every page is written in your child's voice.

1. Tonight we are staying at a hotel. A hotel is a building full of bedrooms that travelers borrow for the night.
2. First we check in at the front desk. We get a key card. The key card taps the door and a little light blinks green. Then the door opens.
The lobby might have echoey floors and rolling suitcase sounds. The elevator dings.

3. Our room has beds, a bathroom, and maybe a TV. It is not our house, but it is ours for tonight. My family sleeps in the same room or right nearby.
Hotel rooms have new smells and stiff blankets. The air machine under the window might hum or click on and off.

4. Honest part: hotels have night sounds. Doors closing down the hall, elevator dings, people walking above. These sounds are just other travelers. They are normal hotel sounds.
Footsteps overhead sound like soft thumps. They stop when people go to sleep.

5. I have choices. I can choose which bed or which side. I can choose what goes on the nightstand. I can ask for an extra blanket from the front desk.
6. In the morning, we pack our things back into our bags. We check every corner so nothing is left behind. I can be the checker under the bed.
7. We give back the key card at the desk or just walk out โ€” a grown-up knows which. Then the hotel stay is over, and our trip rolls on. One borrowed night, done.
