The Movie Theater

Watching a big movie in a big dark room. Read it together, at your pace. Every page is written in your child's voice.

1. Today we are going to the movie theater. A theater shows movies on a screen as big as a wall.
2. First we get tickets. Maybe we get popcorn โ€” it smells buttery everywhere. Then we find our theater number and our seats.
The lobby is bright and busy. Popcorn machines pop and rattle. Then the theater room is dim and cool.

3. Honest part: movies are LOUD, louder than TV at home. The sound comes from all around the room. The previews before the movie can be the loudest part.
Booming sounds can buzz in my chest. The room goes dark except for the screen and little floor lights.

4. I have choices. I can choose my seat โ€” near the aisle is good for breaks. I can keep my headphones on the whole time. I can step out with a grown-up and come back when I am ready.
5. I can practice with Spark. Spark will be the ticket person.
6. During the movie, we whisper if we must talk, so others can hear the show. If I need a break, that is allowed โ€” the movie will keep playing and I can slip back in.
7. When the movie ends, the lights come up slowly. We stretch, gather our things, and walk out past the popcorn smell. The movie trip is over. We can talk about our favorite part all the way home.
