Riding the Subway

A fast train that runs under the city. Read it together, at your pace. Every page is written in your child's voice.

1. Today we are riding the subway. The subway is a train that runs in tunnels under the city.
2. We go down stairs or an escalator into the station. We tap a card at a gate, and the gate lets us through. Then we wait on the platform, standing back from the edge.
Stations are echoey. It might smell dusty and warm. A whoosh of wind comes before the train.

3. Honest part: the train arrives LOUD. It roars and screeches into the station with bright lights and wind. This is the loudest moment. It lasts a few seconds.
Roaring, screeching brakes, rushing air. Many people cover their ears โ€” grown-ups too.

4. The doors slide open. People step off, then we step on. We find a seat or hold a pole. The train speeds through the dark tunnel, swaying a little.
Inside, the tunnel flashes by the windows. The train hums and rocks. A voice announces each stop.

5. I have choices. I can choose to sit or stand and hold the pole. I can cover my ears any time. I can ask, "Which stop is ours?" so I can listen for it.
6. When the voice says our stop, we stand near the doors. The doors open, we step off, and we ride the stairs up to the daylight. The subway ride is over โ€” the city is right there.
