Saying Goodbye to My Pet
My pet died, and my heart hurts.. Read it together, at your pace. Every page is written in your child's voice.
1. My pet died. That means their body stopped working, all the way. It is not like sleeping. They are not coming back.
2. This is one of the biggest sads there is. I might cry a lot. I might feel angry, or quiet, or nothing at all. Every way of feeling this is okay.
3. It was not my fault. Bodies stop working because of sickness or age, not because of anything I did or forgot.
4. When the missing feels huge, I have choices.
look at photos of my pet draw them or write about them cry as much as I need to talk to a grown-up who loved them too
5. I can remember my pet in my own way. Their funny habits. Their favorite spot. The way they greeted me. Remembering keeps my love somewhere safe.
6. One day I might laugh at something, and then feel guilty for laughing. But happy moments are allowed. My pet loved my happy sounds.
7. The sharp part of the sad softens slowly, over weeks and months. The love does not go anywhere. Love stays, even when goodbyes come.
