Something Is Bothering Me

A bother that stays inside grows. Naming it to someone shrinks it.. Read it together, at your pace. Every page is written in your child's voice.

1. Sometimes something bothers me. Maybe someone took my marker. Maybe a sound is too much. Maybe I don't even know what it is yet.
2. One day I kept the bother inside all afternoon. It did not go away. It got bigger and heavier, and by dinner my whole body felt like a storm.
3. Here is what I learned: a bother that stays inside grows. A bother that gets said out loud starts to shrink.
4. I do not have to know exactly what is wrong. "Something is bothering me and I'm not sure what" is a complete, useful sentence.
5. The next time a bother started, I found my person — my dad — and said it: "Something is bothering me."

6. Dad stopped what he was doing. He said, "I'm really glad you told me." We figured it out together — it was the scratchy tag on my shirt plus a hard day. We fixed the tag. The day got lighter.
7. Bothers are normal. Everyone has them. Mine shrink when I say them out loud — and the people who care about me want to hear them.
