Meeting a Friend's Pet

A dog, cat, or other pet at a friend's home. Read it together, at your pace. Every page is written in your child's voice.

1. My friend has a pet. When I visit, I might meet it.
2. Pets can be loud or fast. A dog might bark or jump. A cat might zoom by.
Barking can be sudden and loud. Fur feels different on different animals.

3. Before touching a pet, I always ask. "Can I pet them? Where do they like it?" The owner knows their pet best.
4. The pet comes toward me.
What might the pet do?
  • Sniff me to learn who I am.
  • Get excited and wiggly.
  • Walk away and ignore me.
  • We don't know yet โ€” and that's okay.
๐Ÿ’ก Pets have moods and choices too. I can be calm, ask first, and let the pet decide.
5. I never have to touch a pet if I do not want to. Liking pets from far away is a real way to like pets.
6. When the visit ends, I say bye to my friend โ€” and maybe to the pet too. Meeting an animal is done, and I did it my way.
