Taking New Medicine

A medicine that helps my body feel better. Read it together, at your pace. Every page is written in your child's voice.

1. The doctor gave me a new medicine. Medicine helps my body fight germs or feel better.
2. My medicine might be a liquid, a chewy tablet, or a pill. A grown-up reads the label and gives me the right amount.
Liquid medicine might taste sweet, sour, or a little yucky. The taste goes away soon.

3. I take medicine at the same times each day. A grown-up helps me remember. Taking it every time helps it work.
4. Honest part: some medicine tastes bad for a moment. I can have a drink right after. The taste does not last.
A bad taste might make my face scrunch. That is okay. A sip of water helps fast.

5. I have choices. I can choose water or juice after. I can choose to sit or stand. I can ask, "What is this medicine for?"
6. Sometimes new medicine makes my body feel a little different. If I feel funny, I tell a grown-up. Telling is always the right move.
What could happen after I start my medicine?
  • I start feeling better in a few days.
  • I feel the same at first.
  • My tummy feels a bit odd and we tell the doctor.
  • We don't know yet โ€” we can ask the doctor.
๐Ÿ’ก Bodies react in different ways. We watch, we tell grown-ups, and we can always ask.
7. One day the doctor says I can stop, or the bottle is finished. Then this medicine is done. My job is just to take it and tell grown-ups how I feel.
