Asking to Step Out

Needing the bathroom or a break in class โ€” and the polite way out.. Read it together, at your pace. Every page is written in your child's voice.

1. Sometimes in the middle of class my body needs something: the bathroom, water, or a minute of quiet.
2. Once I waited and waited because everyone was working and I did not want to interrupt. Waiting too long made it an emergency, and emergencies feel awful.
3. Here is the rule, written down: teachers expect these requests. There is a normal way to ask, and using it interrupts almost nothing.
4. In my class the way is: raise my hand, ask quietly, take the pass by the door, come back and sit down. No announcement needed when I return.
5. If I need a break instead of the bathroom, I can say that too. Needing a quiet minute is allowed.

6. The next time my body sent the signal, I asked early. "May I use the bathroom?" My teacher nodded, I took the pass, and I was back in two minutes. Nobody stared. The lesson kept going.
7. Asking early beats waiting until it is huge. My needs are normal, the script is short, and the door works both ways โ€” out, and back in.
