The Plan Changed at the Last Minute
We were about to do the thing, and suddenly the plan is different.. Read it together, at your pace. Every page is written in your child's voice.
1. Sometimes the plan changes right at the last minute. We were going to the pool. Now, suddenly, we are not.
2. A last-minute change can feel like a screech in my whole body. I was ready! My brain already pictured it!
A jolt, a hot rush, a brain full of the old plan with nowhere to put it.
3. Big feelings about sudden changes make sense. My brain built a picture, and the picture broke. It is okay to feel upset about that.
4. First, I can help my body with the jolt.
take slow breaths squeeze my hands together take a break in a quiet spot ask an adult for a hug or help
5. Then I can get the new picture. "What are we doing instead? When can we do the pool?" New information builds a new picture.
6. I can practice my new-plan words.
7. Changed plans still turn into days, and days still have good parts. The jolt fades. Feelings are like weather. They come, and then they go.
